What is a Laboratory Information Management system?

Over the past couple of decades, The LIMS- Laboratory Information Management System has been evolving constantly. Starting with manual labelling and indexing lab samples and reports to the tech-based software used today to automate most processes while dealing with large volumes of samples and patient data.

In simpler words, An LIMS system helps stand-alone labs and hospital labs to maintain a process flow from collection of samples, donor details, storing information, generating reports, and delivering the reports.

Advantages of using a LIMS system:

Some of the core advantages of using a LIMS system are:

  1. Keeping the procedures intact –
It sets a workflow among various departments within the lab. The software helps in ensuring that this workflow is always followed.
  2. Eliminate errors –
It eliminates transcription errors by integrating the lab instruments. Manual human errors are completely eliminated in this process.
  3. Saves time –
Manual labeling and distribution of data are time-consuming. The LIMS helps laboratory staff to automate some of these procedures. Example: Readings from instruments directly assigned into the software.
  4. Integration –
The LIMS can be integrated with other ERP or HMS systems that allow hospitals to create an end-to-end process flow. All patient information during the patient lifecycle can be made available on a common database.
  5. Reduce cost –
LIMS systems also save costs by reducing manual efforts and other storage procedures. It also increases productivity within the lab. Thus, allowing labs to serve more patient volumes.
  6. Avoid repetition of tests –
The test reports of a patient can be saved for a longer time period. This allows the doctor or the patient to retrieve test results on a later date based on validity. The patient does not have to go through the test procedure once again.
  7. Effectively manage inventory and supplies –
A LIMS software allows admin staff to monitor the movement of inventory and supplies within the lab as well. Thus avoiding pilferages and revenue loss.
  8. Directly distribute report –
The report distribution process becomes much more straightforward and easy. The digital copies of the reports can be shared directly with the patient from the softwaree/app. In an integrated LIMS with HMS, doctors will be able to access test results and reports directly.
  9. Control access to data:
The data can be accessed and edited only by those who have permission. Not everybody can view, edit or delete test data on the software. This ensures the security and privacy of patient data.
  10. Analytics and Billing transparency –
The end to end test to results process is highly transparent. The top management will have access to all analytics from a number of tests, patients, materials used, reports generated, billed amount, etc.

The major benefit of using a LIMS is that all laboratory-related information and activities are available on one common platform.
